From the Conqueror to the Present Day: Caen Castle Through the Ages
Located in the heart of Caen, the castle founded by William the Conqueror is one of the largest fortified enclosures in Europe. Over the centuries, its walls have witnessed the passage of kings, soldiers, scholars, animals... and tourists! Let's revisit the fascinating history of this thousand-year-old monument, a witness to the upheavals of French history.
🛡️ 11th century: The cradle of Norman power
Caen Castle was built around 1060 by William the Conqueror , then Duke of Normandy. Its construction was part of an ambitious project: to make Caen an administrative and political capital. The castle symbolizes the power of the duke who became King of England after the conquest of 1066.
Within the ramparts quickly rise the keep , a church (Saint-Georges) , the Exchequer Hall (courtroom), and residential dwellings . It is a major military and administrative center.
⚔️ Middle Ages: Strategic fortress and seat of power
During the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle was fortified by the Plantagenet kings and then the Capetians. It played a strategic role during the Anglo-Norman Wars . Defensive towers and new walls were added.
In the 14th century, during the Hundred Years' War , the castle was contested between the English and the French. It changed hands several times, sometimes housing French troops, sometimes English forces. The local population occasionally sought refuge there during sieges.

🧭 Renaissance and 17th century: Slow transformation
As the Middle Ages drew to a close, the castle's military importance gradually declined. The residential buildings fell into disuse. However, the site continued to be used for military and administrative purposes.
During the Renaissance, it housed judicial offices , and some parts served as barracks . The town developed around the castle, which became both an urban landmark and a stronghold.
🦁 19th – early 20th century: From bastion to leisure venue
From the 19th century onwards, the castle was converted into a military barracks . It served as a garrison until the early 20th century. Surprisingly, in the 1930s, a small zoo was established within the grounds, featuring lions, monkeys, and even a polar bear, to attract visitors!
This unusual chapter in the castle's history shows how it has always evolved with the times.
💣 1944: The castle in turmoil
In June 1944, Allied bombing raids on Caen caused significant damage to the castle, which was hit several times. After the war, archaeological excavations began, revealing numerous traces of the medieval buildings.
The city of Caen then decided to restore and promote this exceptional heritage.
